Water damage is the most common household loss in the industry.  These types of losses can range from simple sponging up of excess water to complete water mitigation using the most advanced techniques and technology.   Although water loss isn’t always the worst loss to your home, it certainly is damaging and, if left alone, can become extremely severe.  Like fire damage, there are several different classifications of water damage.

  • Category 1 water:  water originating from a source that does not pose substantial harm to humans.  (Also referred to as “clean water”)
  • Category 2 water:  water containing a significant degree of chemical, biological and/or physical contamination and having the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans.  (Also referred to as “gray water”)
  • Category 3 water:  grossly unsanitary water, containing pathogenic agents arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans.  This category includes all forms of seawater, ground surface water, and rising water from rivers or streams.  (Also referred to as “black water”)

In order to make an assessment of loss, these classifications must be considered when diagnosing the procedures to be taken.  For example, if a water loss only contains water of Category 1,  the level of containment and removal can be faster because you don’t need to give as much attention or caution to harmful substances in the water.
